  1. PARTIES OF 4 OR LESS ONLY!!! We were so excited to go back to the dene cafe today- but the staff were so rude and unhelpful- we were clearly not welcome with buggies and a guide dog – we sat outside to eat our lunches (because there were several buggies and we didn't want to crowd the place) – but we got told off for walking through the cafe, even though we needed to order food en route and the door to back was locked. After we had our lunch and were getting cold – everyone else had left(wed afternoon) – so we went inside to have coffee and cake – we were the only people in the entire place and got told off for putting two tables together …i don't know what you're supposed to do if there is a family of 6 or if you go with friends – we' then got told off for using the wrong doors again -even though there are no signs for the loos. there are so many tables of two crammed together you couldn't fit a buggy or wheel chair through. it was really annoying to spend so much money then have them be so unwelcome – the people in before us had put tables togther so i think the buggies and guide dog annoyed them! bit daft being so un-child friendly in such a family place!

the decor was as grey as the staff faces and the scones were good but other food was lack lustre, panini's weren't cooked enough….all of this would not matter if the people who worked there were helpful to the only customers they had…problem is its such a great place for a cafe they can probably get away with being poor standard and poor service…wonder if there is any competition for the place… such a fab location deserves something special there…not average food grump fest staff

    1. I have been a regular customer of Millfield House Cafe both old and new. I have always found the staff to be polite, professional and very helpful. The food quality is very good and the cafe area was spotless on our visit last week. I would also like to point out that my collegues and I have attended various conference's and training days at Millfield House and we have always received excellent service from all of the staff. Nothing is too much trouble.

      1. I have had the privilage to arrange large conference's all around the country in the past few years. To mention just a few Glasgow, Manchester and London. I have also been a Conference customer of Jesmond Dene Conference Centre, in Millfield House both in the past and present, since it's re-opening in September 2010. This high class Conference centre ranks alongside the best ones that I have attended during my career. I have always had extremely positive feed back from all the delegates that have attended Millfield House. The Conference centre now has new technology available to use, such as free plasma tv's in the conference rooms, free broadband connection, and a host of other free equipment. This makes this Conference centre excellent value for money. The delicious food especially has always been very impressive and continues to be so. The contemporary feel of the decor is lovely. The staff are friendly, efficient whilst not intrusive. Highly recommended.

  2. I haven't been to the new cafe yet, but all I can say is that the staff have always been rude, snobby, lack a good level of communication skills and most definitely disorganised. The only thing decent has been the food.

  3. It is great to have the coffee shop reopened ! The new premises are lovely, upgraded baby changing, lots of room inside and out.

The staff have always been very helpful and accomodating, the food and drink great too. It is lovely to have you back – debbie

  4. Visited today with two friends, found the food on offer overpriced and lacking in variety. Appears to be a case of maximum profit for minimum effort.

  5. I’VE SEARCHED AND SEARCHED. THE CAFE IS OPEN 5 DAYS A WEEK ACCORDING TO THE INTRO ABOVE – BUT WHICH 5 DAYS?

  6. The cafe service is good most of the time, sometimes seems a little crowded with way too many tables. the toilets and baby changing seem to get dirtier as the day goes on with little evidence of being cleaned. Visited at the weekend opted to change my grandson outside. Overall the staff are pleasant most of the time, and the food is nice

    1. Thank you for your comments.I would just like to point out that the toilets are the responsibility of Newcastle City Council and not the cafe, they are cleaned and stocked every morning and I and my staff try to keep an eye on them during the day but as they are for the general public and not just cafe customers there is not much more we can do.As for the cafe being a little crowded,we are family orientated and therefore usually have small children who require highchairs and buggies which tend to make the place look a little crowded but our little friends are most welcome as is everybody else.

  7. Yesterday on our way to the cafe our little grandson fell asleep in the car. hubby went to the cafe and asked what was the latest time we could order our coffee. He was told we could order up to 4.30 so we waited for the little one to wake up. We went to the door at 4.05 and it was in the process of being locked. When we complained we were told that they were closing soon, however we were allowed in and and ordered our cofee. the staff were rude and very grumpy and we felt like we had inconvenienced them. we will not be going again, shame because the coffee and cake is nice.

  8. I write this review solely about Millfield House Cafe. I visited Jesmond Dene with my baby daughter for a day trip out. We walked along to the old mill, visited pets corner and played in the park. All in all a lovely day. I then decided that both she and I needed feeding so embarked upon the only Cafe available, Millfield House Cafe opposite pets corner next to the visitor centre. The cafe has a very canteen like feel about it with cheep table and chairs and little atmosphere. However they offer hot food (not cooked fresh) and prepacked sandwiches and drinks. I ordered a tea only as I was feeding my daughter weaning food I had prepared. I ordered my tea and found a table and got a high chair. They weren’t busy and it would have been nice if they had offered to bring the tea over to save me having to leave my daughter but that’s a small gripe. Firstly I had to clean down the high chair. I had a choice of 3 but all were dirty with food and crumbs from previous uses. It was clear they hadn’t been cleaned for a while as some of the food was dried on. I then sat down to have my cup of tea. I then witnessed a man come to order two cups of coffee. He asked if there was fresh milk. He was told no, little cartons only. He went to get these and I saw the staff member serving drinks raise his eyes to the chef. The man then took a sip and said it was slightly too strong for him and could he have some boiled water. The staff member said ‘certainly sir’ and gave him a pot of water. As the man walked away, the staff member looked at the chef and mouth ‘puff’. The chef said ‘what?’ And the staff member repeated this time audibly, ‘he’s a puff. The coffee is too strong for him. He’s a puff’.
I’m not only disgusted and shocked that someone would criticise a customer for wanting a drink that he is paying for to be how he likes it, but that such a defamatory word was used and in ear shot of other customers. So be warned people. If you choose to visit. Take everything how it comes as if you don’t you risk a slur being said about you. I mean after all, you are only spending your own money!!!

Fake Moos? Cattle Run Was For People Not Cows

Funny, isn’t it, how once something becomes generally accepted it gets, well, accepted? Take Armstrong Park’s “cattle run”: according to an interpretation panel, this distinctive feature was sunk for bovine use by Victorian industrialist Lord Armstrong, writes Carlton Reid. The livestock, goes the story, were herded through this costly railway-style cutting because the route had long been used for leading cows to pasture.
