Yesterday’s ‘super cell thunder storm’ caused destruction across Tyneside. Here’s what it did in Jesmond Dene:

Autumn Newsletter 2023 – A missing painting and Armstrong’s romantic side.
In this issue of the Friends of Jesmond Dene Newsletter we have articles from Henrietta Heald, who is the author of Magician of the North, a biography of William Armstrong, Baron Armstrong of Cragside (1810–1900). She writes about the missing painting of Prince Hal (more below). We also have an article on Lord Armstrong’s environmentalism, written by Keaton Bailey who’s dissertation was based on Jesmond Dene and Lord Armstrong.
You will also find updates from FOJD, what we’ve been up to and recent events, plus how you can help support the Dene.

An amazing film Carlton.
Thanks, Seamus. An amazing day. And one I’d rather not see repeated. Obviously.

An amazing amount of water, Michael. How do you think the wildlife fared?
Thanks, I left work early that day, which meant I got home safely but it did mean I missed all these fantastic images! So thanks for sharing them.
Hard to believe that standing behind a wall in Jesmond Dene would have been a dangerous job that day…
Just stumbled on this, I jog through Jesmond Dene about once a week – obviously gave it a miss the week of the storm – went through last week and, apart from the pile of rubble on Ouseburn Road, you wouldn’t know it had been this bad. Amazing.
